Diet Review: The Shangri-La Diet
The underlying theory behind the Shangri-La weight loss diet is that our body has a ‘set point’ that can be reduced to a lower weight by consuming small quantities of plain olive oil and sugared water in between meals. The Shangri-La diet comprises of bland and low-on-taste foods that do very little to entice us. This coupled with 300 calories in the form of light olive oil or sugar water taken in between meals makes sure that the body settles to a lower appetite. This would make one eat less and lose weight keeping the mind and appetite in control.
How does this diet work?
This diet works on the set point theory. This means that everybody has a set point at which the body or rather our brain strives to keep our weight. By eating bland and tasteless food and filling our stomach with food such as olive oil or sugar water, our brain lowers our set point to reduce our appetite and this lowers our weight. It not only helps us reduce our weight but maintain it as well by controlling our mind.
- Foods pertaining to low glycemic index such as steamed broccoli.
- 1-4 tablespoons of olive oil are consumed between meals during the day in addition to sugar water as a major requirement.
- Bland and tasteless foods such as mashed vegetables, steamed fruits and blended foods.
- Fruit as snacks are allowed in the diet
Foods not allowed in the diet
No foods with spices, flavor and seasoning are allowed in the diet to make sure it does not arouse your appetite and does not tempt you to overeat it.
Advantages of this diet
- Inexpensive compared to most other diet plans.
- This kind of diet does not restrict any food in particular and the quantity to be eaten. It is extremely low in calories as bland food is usually low in calories.
Disadvantages of the diet
- It does not advocate the principle of exercise which many try to avoid.
- Consuming plain oil and sugar water may be difficult for some people.
- Eating only bland tasteless foods is not very appealing or enjoyable.
- May create social difficulties during interactions and social events.
- May be difficult to maintain weight loss when consumption of foods with flavor is resumed.
- Doesn’t address psychological factors involved in weight management.
- Consuming olive oil many times a day is not a comfort to many.
- It may make the person feel so deprived of tasty food that one may start overeating under psychological stress after following this diet.
