5 Things You Should Consider Before Going On A Diet



A healthy balanced meal is no different from going on a diet. Food is essentially the most important component of any diet, so, if you are starving yourself, you have probably got some details wrong. Despite what you read in diet books and newspapers, healthy eating could be quite straightforward and simple. Here is a list of five things to consider before going on a diet.


One diet doesn’t fit all!


What worked for your friend might not work for you. Asessment is the key to knowing what your needs are. Have a thorough assessment of your nutritional needs, body composition and medical conditions before you even think of starting a new diet pattern. This will also give a direction to your diet and you could then choose food items and exercise patterns to suit your needs.


Know your health goals and set smaller achievable targets


Do you want to lose weight so that you look good at your cousins wedding or is it because you want better control over your diabetes. It is helpful to know, why you have decided to go on a diet, so that you can set specific and attainable health goals. Don’t try to shed that weight overnight, instead aim at losing a couple of kg’s each month. Essentially, make goals that you can stick to in the long run. Can you stay away from rice and fish curry for the rest of your life?


Is your diet safe?


If you haven’t seen a qualified nutritionist, and have taken the diet chart off the internet, you might want to know if your diet has any scientific reasoning or whether it’s just another fad/crash diet. There is plenty of information on the net and all of it might not be true. Look for authentic websites with references to research journals.


Are you meeting your needs?


It is crucial that you still receive all macronutrients and micronutrients even when you go on your diet. Ask yourself, are you depriving yourself of key nutrients carbohydrates, proteins and fats, all of which provide energy for your day to day metabolic activities and helps in body building and growth.


Make sure if you really need any dietary supplements


Do you really need that calcium supplement or protein supplements? Remember there is no miracle drink or churna (powders) that can make you lose weight without changing your faulty eating habits. It’s more like no pain, no gain! If you see an ad on television or in the newspaper and are unsure about its safety, seek professional help from your physician and a registered dietitian.


Remember to make eating a joyous occasion by including plenty of variety in your meals. See meal times as an opportunity to bond with friends, colleagues and family and to build memories to nourish and cherish your body.  It is indeed rightly said, there is no diet that will do what healthy eating does!
