(IANS) As many as 313 confirmed cases of dengue have been reported so far in West Bengal, a senior health department official said Monday.

"We have 313 confirmed cases of dengue in the state, out of which 204 are in Kolkata alone," he said.

When the epidemic first began in the second week of August, the number of confirmed cases was 80. After a review meeting Friday on the status of dengue in the state, it was revealed that there were 209 confirmed cases.

Several people in and around Kolkata have been hospitalised with symptoms similar to dengue.

The state government will launch an intense awareness campaign throughout all the disease-prone areas and train 142 medical officers of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to tackle the menace, as most of the confirmed cases are reported in the city.

The dengue-prone areas have been divided into category A and B, going by the intensiveness of the disease in the area. Kolkata is under category A and areas of Howrah, Siliguri and Asansol are under category B.
