Diabetes affects millions of people around the globe. It is a serious lifelong health problem that can be managed easily if the patient has been educated well; right from the time of diagnosis. Since Diabetes is a chronic disease that requires a patient to take decisions regarding food intake, exercise and insulin/ medication is an important part of each day in order to manage blood glucose levels. Thus, managing diabetes is an everyday job and the Patient is in charge!  Developing self-management will help the patient control blood sugar and achieve health goals. Hence, self- management is the cornerstone of overall diabetes care.

Initial education for the patient with diabetes should include basic knowledge that will facilitate the maintenance of acceptable blood glucose levels.
