Skin Care: What Causes Adult Acne?

Recently scientists have spent considerable time and money on researching the effects of stress on skin, amongst other facets of personal health. As a result, dermatology in the 21st century places a great deal of focus on stress and its results on skin.

Studies suggest that cells that produce the oily substance sebum have receptors for stress hormones. An over-production of stress hormones causes a sebum build-up, which when it mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria, clogs up hair follicles, resulting in acne and pimples. Bottom-line: When you are highly stressed, a lot more sebum or oily substance is formed, causing a lot more acne.
