Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Understanding the Cause behind the Ice Bucket Challenge

Anyone who has access to social media today has certainly heard about the ice bucket challenge. There are numerous videos of celebrities, famous people and regular people dumping buckets of icy water over their heads.


This may seem like a ridiculous thing to do but the motive behind it is to spread awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Apart from this, the ice bucket challenge also encourages donations for the ALS Association that is researching the disease. Which bring us to the main issue, what exactly is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS? To understand this chronic disease better, Dr. P.P. Ashok, Consultant Neurologist and Head, Division of Neurology at Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, Mumbai, gives us his expert views about it.
