The word ‘Bonking’ clearly has more than one meaning. The two that immediately spring to mind are to do with having sex, and ‘hitting the wall’ in terms of athletics. For an athlete, it refers to the abrupt physiological response to ‘running out of fuel’ or more specifically ‘running out of carbohydrate.’ Karan D’souza, cyclist and aerobics trainer at Mangalore Cycling Union, elaborates: “Bonking feels terrific, but it can make you cry. You don’t just slow down, you are drenched out of energy, and you get really hungry. Everything stops, and it is like a moment gone wrong.” Sounds like something you’d want to avoid? We help you with some tips and tricks to do just that, with expert inputs from Karan D’ souza. *Images courtesy: © Thinkstock photos/ Getty Images
