When should one take a pre-workout snack:

Two hours before a workout -
Consume food that will give sufficient calories. You know you are going to burn a certain number of calories during the workout, hence consume half of that amount beforehand to prep your body. Make sure these calories are from the good carbs that you eat, this will help you maintain blood sugar levels. It is also recommended to consume protein so your muscles will not break down for fuel.

30 minutes before a workout - Half an hour before you plan to workout you can eat or drink a quick-release sugar snack that consists of simple carbs. For example, bananas, peanut butter on cracker, or energy bars. These snacks give your body quick fuel, without increasing your calorie intake by too much.
