Health Star of The Week: Yoga for Weight Loss

 

A medical checkup revealed that 27-year-old Hemani was 20 kgs overweight. Hemani spend no time mulling over her weight, instead she took up yoga to help her burn calories and reach her ideal weight.

Age:  28 yrs

Profession: Dietician

Weight before (1 May 2013): 77.7kg

Weight now: 61kg

 

When did you realise that you were overweight? Was it a ‘Happy realisation’ or a medical issue? 

As a teen, I was always involved in physical activities in school and university.  I was a part of various sports clubs. But after graduation, once I bgean working, I put sports and exercise went on the back burner and after a point I stopped exercising. A full body check up revealed that I was 20 kgs above my ideal weight. My clothes didn’t fit and I got tired easily. I had turned into a slob, which was a warning sign at my age. 

 

How did you begin your weight loss journey? Tell us about the baby steps you took, like avoiding junk food, alcohol or if you started going for a walk after lunch etc?

In the initial days it was quite difficult for me to exercise, because I had to replace my snack time (around 11 am and 5 pm) with my yoga classes. The thought of skipping my chai, samosa or bread roll or bread pakora every day was depressing. 

So I came up with a secret slogan for myself, ‘I gotto get fit at 28’ and ‘get that sexy waist back’, everytime I felt like binging I would repeat this in my mind. These words began to motivate me. Once I started getting result s my determination got stronger day by day.

 

Tell us about your exercise regime? How difficult was it in the beginning to exercise? What were your biggest concerns? 

I joined hatha yoga to learn yoga , I started following my gurujee passionately , he started sessiosn with  10 minutes of medication, 10 minutes of stretching, 40 minutes of hatha yoga and  5-7 minutes of kriya twice a day. In the beginning I found it boring and a slow process, but just after two weeks I started loving it. The changes were quite visible.

 

Tell us about your diet? What type of changes did you make? Did your family help you or join you in your efforts?

Intially it is a little difficult to avoid the office group chai time and snacks, I use to have a couch potato attitude. But, when I joined hatha yoga under my guruji, he knew my weakness and my craving for golgappas and and street food. He helped me follow a satvic diet  for three months.

I hated the taste of herbal tea, khichri and poha , so my father stepped in to motivate me by eating the same diet. This worked for me, and then I started enjoying everything.

 

Tell us about your diet in detail? 

Early morning empty stomach: One glass of water + Aloe vera juice

Pre workout (optional): Green tea

Breakfast: Herbal tea + Poha

Post workout: A bowl of yogurt

Lunch: Khichri+ soft dal+salad

Evening:  Herbal tea+ 4 almonds

Evening: Soup or Salad

Dinner: Namkeen dalia + a bowl of vegetables

 

Tell us about the happiness or achievements post weight loss

The very first complement I got was from my mother- in- law, she introduce me to her friend saying, “Meet my sexy daughter-in-law” that was the biggest compliment. I feel happy about my looks and feel more confident. Now, I can proudly  declare that I am medically fit and healthy.
