Summer Snacks to Keep You Cool

Summer is here with a vengeance, and I’m convinced it only has one mission: To sap us of energy. But instead of complaining, here are some ways to celebrate summer and tackle it head on. While our regular healthy snacks like nuts and boiled eggs are great for energy supplies, they're not very appetising in this scorching heat. We really do need snacks that will keep us hydrated and cool, instead of snacks that add to the heat. So here are some summer snacks that will keep you cool, and keep the hunger pangs at bay.

1) Watermelon salad
Watermelons are in season and they are one of the best things you can eat in summer. Liven up watermelon with this unique tasting salad. Chop watermelon into cubes, add feta cheese, pine nuts, and basil leaves, and you are good to go.

2) Yoghurt with fruits
Seasonal fruits are the best as they come during summer with one specific reason – to cool you down. So mix some of those grapes, oranges or mangoes once they finally get here, to add sweetness to yoghurt (the creamier the better). Don’t forget to add nuts for the extra crunchiness, and you have yourself a delicious summer snack.

3) Hung Curd Dip
The cooling effect of hung curd – which is curd wrapped in a muslin cloth until all the water drains off – combined with your favourite spices like garlic, onions, capsicum, green chilies, cucumber, red chili flakes, oregano, salt, pepper, etc. is great when paired with fresh vegetables. Make a big batch of your favourite hung curd dip and keep munching carrots, celery, cucumber, broccoli, or banana or kand (purple yam) chips once in a while to take care of your snacking needs during summer.

4) Healthy Sandwiches
Load up your sandwiches with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and cold tuna. This is a recipe to keep you cool, as tuna is lighter than many other types of meat, so it takes care of your protein requirements without adding to the heat of your body. Make sure you add a lot of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber for a really cool sandwich. There are a lot of cold sandwiches you can make from cold cuts and fresh vegetables. A Russian Salad sandwich is a good choice for vegetarians.
