Dr Apoorva Shah from Richfeel Trichology answers our query…
Trichorrhexis Nodosa is a defect in the hair shaft characterised by thickening or weak points (nodes) that cause the hair to break off easily. This group of conditions contributes to the appearance of hair loss, lack of growth and damaged looking hair. It is commonly seen in the patients who are into chemical treatments like colouring, perming, straightening. Colouring hair causes chemical damage. It makes the hair strand dry and brittle. When you colour your hair, the cuticle opens up and the colour enters the cortex making it brittle.
When you are trying to change the shape of your hair, tremendous heat is applied on the hair so that the protein cystine (which the hair is composed of) is converted into cysteine. It is then manipulated to get the desired look. During that process, 20% of the protein gets converted into cystic acid which is the permanent loss. Breakages are very common because of heat.
So the next time you are thinking of playing with your hair chemically, please check on the hair damage it will lead to:
- Dry hair
- Burnt hair
- Hair needs continuous quoting of heat protective product.
- The damage to the hair is irreversible
- Chances of the cuticle getting damaged are high if permanent straightening is done was a ill trained beautician
- Hair becomes brittle from gels, sprays and chemicals used for hair straightening
- Permanent hair straightening can lead to split ends in the hair
