With all our 9 to 5 desk jobs, it's not uncommon to come back home with stiff backs and backaches that can keep us twisting and turning all night long. People with back pain often complain that they can never figure out the right sleeping position that will aid their back. To uncover this mystery, Dr. Rajeev K Sharma, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals contributes his suggestions and tips.

  • It should keep your spine straight and back rested.

  • Do not use very thick pillows as they tend to put your neck on a much higher elevation than the body; this means the spine isn't straight. It can put pressure on the nerves around the neck.

  • Your spine, shoulders, head, arms and legs should be in proper alignment while lying down.

  • Do not lie in distorted positions as many people do when they read while on a bed or watch TV while lying down. This again causes dealignment of the back and can result in pain.

The most significant part in this is maintaining a good back posture that doesn't twist the spine or gives it a curvature whatever position you are in, be it sitting, walking or lying down. It is important to understand that the spine is connected to a large number of nerves across its length and any faulty position will not only hurt the spine but will also put undue pressure on the nerves, causing pain and other problems.
