Household Chores to Avoid During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a period when you get sudden urges to eat random things at unusual times; for instance, chewing on sour tamarind in the middle of night. However, you need to take utmost care of yourself as there is another life living inside you.  Besides taking extra care and attention in terms of food, the question arises - which household chores should one avoid during pregnancy. Some household chores are not recommended for expecting mothers. Let’s take a look.

Here are some household chores, which should be avoided during pregnancy:

Avoid carrying heavy loads: Follow the guidelines laid down by your healthcare provider as to how much weight your body can lift from one trimester to the next. You’re already undergoing a lot of back strain because you will be carrying your growing baby. Due to which there will be sudden change in how you hold yourself because your centre of gravity moves forward (via). Therefore objects like your older child, a bucket of water, a bagful of groceries, a gas cylinder, etc will increase the strain on your back even more.

Chemical-heavy products can be harmful
. Instead, you can opt for natural products; for instance, you can use vinegar or baking soda for cleaning purposes. If you absolutely have to use the chemical products, use them in moderation. Always wear gloves, cover your mouth and make sure that the room is well ventilated (via) .

Don’t touch that cat poo.
Handling cat poo should be completely avoided during pregnancy. As cat feces contains a parasite that causes the infection toxoplasmosis. This infection won’t bother you much, but it will be deadly for your developing baby. (via)

Avoid climbing.
It is not advisable to climb on stools or ladders. Doing this might put you at risk of losing your balance and falling. No matter what the reason, always wait for assistance, whether to change a light bulb or fetch a suitcase from the loft. (via)

Avoid bending constantly. This applies to sleeping, sweeping, clearing litter on the floor and washing clothes. Bending all the time will affect your back. In case, there is something which has to be picked up, and there is no one to help around, then it is advisable that you crouch instead of bending. (via)

Avoid standing for long durations. Stay away from tasks that involve standing for long hours as this might add extra stress on your base. This may cause swollen feet.

A few household chores that avoid the above movements are generally considered safe. They could be great options  to remain active. Avoid risky posture and stance, and enjoy a safe and healthy pregnancy.
