Hing or Asafoetida is characterised by its pungent garlic like smell. A favourite tadka ingredient in India, hing is commonly used in dal, sambhar and vegetarian recipes. But this humble herb has more to offer than just mystifying taste.

 

Indigestion: Hing is rich in anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant properties that help in treating indigestion problems like upset stomach, flatulence, constipation, and intestinal worms. Juts add a pinch of Asafoetida in half a cup of honey and use it as an effective laxative at home.

 

Menstrual Problems: Women can use hing to treat menstrual problems like muscle cramps, lower abdominal pain, irregular menses, white or yellow coloured vaginal discharge and dysmenorrhoea.

 

Impotency: Hing is a natural aphrodisiac that helps in boosting libido in men and helps fight male infertility.

 

Diabetes: Hing helps in reducing the blood sugar levels of the body thus assisting the pancreatic cells to emit additional insulin. This may sound unappetizing but add bitter gourd and asafoetida to your diet to control diabetes.

 

Blood Pressure: The Coumarins present in Hing, aids blood thinning and stops blood from clotting. This ultimately helps in maintaining cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure in the body.

 

Treating Pain: A concoction of Hing mixed with water can treat headaches and migraines. A tablespoon of Hing mixed with lemon juice can reduce dental pain.

 

Cancer: Acccording to different studies Asafoetida is rich in anti-carcinogenic properties that fights the growth of malignant cells.
