Winter Skincare: 10 Tips to Prevent Dry Skin
Skin tends to lose more moisture in the winter months, when temperatures are cold and the humidity is low. Here are some simple tips to keep your skin hydrated and glowing. Dr. Anuj Saigal, dermatologist – Enhance Clinics shares with us some winter skincare tips to fight dry skin.
#1: Wash your skin with olive, almond or avocado oil. Pat the oil on your skin, rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh soaps and astringents. Limit baths to once a day and use a bath emollient to improve hydration.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #2: Moisturise your skin in the morning and before going to bed. Use a moisturiser that contains humectants, such as glycerin and vitamin E, which help skin attract and hold in moisture.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #3: Use an oil based moisturizer rather than water based as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin. You can apply a thin layer of olive oil or pure shea butter to dry elbows, feet, arms or other dry areas.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #4: Exposure to sunlight can dry out skin, even in winter months, so be sure to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater when outdoors.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #5: Use a humidifier to increase the moisture in the air in your home or workplace. You also can place a pan of water near a radiator.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #6: Do not neglect your dry scalp. Use a deep moisturising shampoo to soften patches of dry skin and reduce itchiness.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #7: Never wash the dishes or work with household chemicals without putting on gloves. Take care of your feet when you are home and wear cotton socks or slippers.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #8: Eat a well-balanced diet including whole grains, seeds, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Increase your consumption of foods rich in sulfur, such as onions, garlic, eggs and asparagus, which helps keep skin smooth.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #9: Replace vegetable oil or animal fats with cold-pressed oils such as extra-virgin olive oil and sesame oil. Supplements of evening primrose oil maybe helpful in people with dry skin.
Tips to Prevent Dry Skin #10: Drink at least 2 litres of water every day to hydrate your skin and reduce or eliminate your intake of alcohol and caffeine.
