Tips for Expectant Fathers

If you’re a guy whose wife just got pregnant, what can you do to make sure your wife goes through a smooth term? A lot! Expectant fathers need not be mere spectators anymore. Mumbai-based gynaecologist Nazema Lalla tells us what fathers-to-be-can do to for their expectant wives. Here’s a simple guide to being a great partner for your wife through her pregnancy:

 

 


Be Involved: Be there for everything- right from doctor’s appointments to ultrasounds and choosing names. Now is your time to be patient through any concern she might want to discuss.

Be Patient: It is perfectly normal for a woman to get extremely irritable and snappy, especially during the last trimester. Patience will save the day! Resist getting that can of sardines home if you know that the smell of it will make her sick.

Keep the Spark Alive: Pregnancy does not mean sexual abstinence. Although in some cases it might be required.  Talk to your gynaec to find out if sex is safe. In certain cases you may be asked to completely refrain from it. Also your partner’s sexual desire may fluctuate with each trimester. Tread cautiously, but don’t banish the act altogether. More than anything, sexual play during your partner’s pregnancy will give her self-body image a boost also.

Be a Positive Influence: Help your partner eat right, and also take up light exercise like walking or yoga. You can even help her out with medication reminders.

Become Her Masseuse: Give her a back or foot rub. She will need it as the back and foot muscles are the most stressed ones during pregnancy.

Go for Labour Classes: This will prepare you for the actual process when the time comes. This way, the yelling, the pushing, the blood and more will not scare you when you are there during the birth. Being in the labour room is very important. Your partner will need your support and will appreciate you braving it.

Be as Involved Post Birth: Your role does not end in the delivery room. Be as supportive of your partner after the pregnancy, as you were during the pregnancy. Help with chores like feeding, changing, burping etc. Your wife may still go through mood swings. These are normal. Be gentle and (try in any case) talk her out of them. However, if you feel that things are going out of hand, you may want to get some professional help as it may just be post partum depression.

Pregnancy comes with a lot of physical and emotional changes for your partner. It may get stressful for you too. But by following these tips and with a little patience, you can make it a smooth ride for both of you.
